Update 1.0

A New Dawn

The beginning of a new journey.

4New sets
32New roles
60+Reworked roles

Gameplay Changes

Announcements

  • Previously announcements would reveal too much information about the state of the game.
  • Specific actions (like attacks, protects and heals) are no longer announced. Rather, only their result is announced.
  • The only time death is distinct is when by incineration, as it denies role reveal.
  • The only form of protection that is ever announced is Divine Protection.
Players gathered in the village square at dawn

The only announcements are now

Players that die or are incinerated
Bleeds and ignites being applied
Players saved by Divine Protection

Silent Night

This new announcement structure opens up a whole new world of claimability and gaslighting.

Previously, a Greenhorn surviving a Werewolf attack would confirm that that player is not a Werewolf and has permanent defense.

Now, that night is completely silent, leaving all cards on the table for possibilities and discussion.

Discussion

The discussion phase is the heart of the game. It should give players enough time to explore different claims and “versions” of the game without feeling rushed.

The discussion phase's base length is now shorter, but the timer per alive player has been increased. This means discussion is long when you need it to be, but short as the game comes to a close.

−20sBase length
+4sPer alive player
Players debating around a campfire

Voting

Voting has always been the weakest aspect of the game. Everything from sniping, to having half the Village accused. These changes address both of these issues and cement voting as what it always should have been - the main engine of the game.

Accusation Vote

  • Accusation votes can no longer be changed or removed.
  • Accusation votes are no longer decided by vote majority. Rather, all players that meet the minimum vote threshold are accused.
  • The threshold is 2 votes until there are only 3 players left alive, at which point only 1 vote is required.

Execution Vote

  • Execution votes are no longer only decided by vote majority. Rather, a player can only be executed if they receive enough votes and have majority.
  • The votes required to execute a player is 35% of available votes. So for example if 5 players can vote, 2 votes can execute a player.

Keywords

Protect

  • All roles that protect can now protect a player on consecutive nights.

Heal

Heal has been simplified. It is now consumed to have an effect, in this order:

  • If the target is affected by any over-time effect (bleed, ignite or poison), all over-time effects are fully removed.
  • If the target is being attacked, the attack is reduced to a bleed.

Enhance

  • Abilities used by an enhanced player are now unstoppable and guaranteed.

Frail

  • Frail now affects both day and night, which allows it to interact with Divine Protection.

Expose

  • Exposed players are now simply forcibly accused.

Hex

Hex now only affects how players learn things. A hexed player:

  • Learns flipped information, or incorrect information if it cannot be flipped.

Now, to the meaty bits..

Dark Aura

A new attribute that certain roles have.

Dark Aura

  • Most Werewolves and Evils have Dark Aura.
  • Some very strong Village roles also have Dark Aura

No Aura

Clean does not mean safe.

Clean wolves, clean Evils and clean wildcards exist in every set.

Why?

Previously, we relied on convoluted mechanics like capabilites.

Nothing learns capabilities anymore, which drastically increases the amount of roles that you can claim.

Dark Aura provides an elegant way to guide players toward discussion about specific players without causing all games to be completely solvable.

A new structure

The Neutral and Lesser Evil pools are combined into a single wildcard seat.

A 12 player game is now:

3Werewolves
1Evil
1WildcardNeutral or Lesser Evil
7Village

This asserts the Village as the uninformed majority, and the Werewolves as the informed minority.

Note

Guide not Rule

This structure is a guideline, not a rule. Balance will vary based on specific roles used.

Multiple Wildcards

Multiple wildcards can be present in a game, especially at lower player counts.

Duplicable roles

Roles cannot appear more than once in a single game, unless explicitly stated.

Right..

The Great Divide

Standard is being split up into four curated sets, each with its own identity, theme and difficulty.

Standard 91 roles
I Blood Moon 32 roles Classic Deduction
II Forest Folk 31 roles Wild Faith
III Arcane 31 roles Magical Mayhem.
IV Court of Knives 31 roles Royal Betrayal

Why Though?

01

A whole new world

Each set has its own theme, instead of all roles trying to fit into the same world. This allows for more thematic and interesting roles to appear in each set.

02

A ladder, not a cliff

Each set introduces new mechanics, allowing for a natural and paced way for players to learn the game's mechanics and rules.

03

A roster you can learn

30 roles roles is infinitely more digestible than a gigantic 91 role mega set. You no longer need to memorize all roles in the game before you can play well.

04

The special sauce

All sets share the core social deduction special sauce, allowing for wildly different experiences without having to relearn rules or roles.
